My breakfast meals usually contain some sort of fruit, and I like to eat a half a grapefruit on occasion. I used to have a grapefruit knife, one that my mother gave me years ago, but somehow it got lost and I cannot find it. Using a regular paring knife does not work well, and makes a mess of my grapefruit.
I have been looking in the grocery stores for weeks trying to find a specific grapefruit knife, to no avail. My husband didn’t even know that you could buy a grapefruit knife. In order to find one, I ended up shopping online, where you can find just about anything!
What I found was the Rösle® Grapefruit Knife. This is a kitchen tool that is made of stainless steel, with a round hollow handle, and the serrated, curved blade made specifically for cutting around the edges of the grapefruit, but also for cutting the segments apart from each other.
This knife has a stainless steel handle that measures 4″ long, but the entire length of the tool is almost 9″ in length. If you have never used a grapefruit knife, you might be like my husband and wonder “Why do you need a grapefruit knife?” Well, I am here to tell you that once you have used a grapefruit knife, you will not want to go back to using any other kind of knife to cut your grapefruit ever again! You will be spoiled, as I was spoiled.
First I cut the fruit in half, so you can see the cross-section of the fruit. Now take the Rösle® Grapefruit Knife and with the curved part of the blade following the “bowl” of the grapefruit, cut along the outside edges, separating the fruit from the rind. After that has been cut, now take the thin blade and cut between the thin segments connecting each section of fruit. These are very thin membranes, and they are hard to cut and separate using a normal paring knife.
After all of that has been done, you can take the curved portion of the blade and use it to lift out the loosened grapefruit sections. If you have a grapefruit spoon (a teaspoon with a serrated tip), you can use this to get the rest of the fruit out of the grapefruit cup, because you will probably miss some of it when you are cutting, it’s very hard to cut it in an exact manner.
The grapefruit knife that I used to own has a wooden handle, and since I don’t like putting wooden utensils in my dishwasher, that meant that I had to wash the utensil by hand. Since the Rösle® Grapefruit Knife is made of stainless steel, this utensil can indeed be washed in the dishwasher, and I don’t have to worry about one part of it drying out. The handle is also round, so it’s very comfortable to hold and has a good hand feel. There is even a loop at the end that would allow you to hang this knife up if you so desired, but I can’t imagine doing that in my kitchen.
The Rösle® Grapefruit Knife is backed with a five year warranty, which is a very good warranty these days. I highly recommend the Rösle® Grapefruit Knife! If you are looking for a grapefruit knife, this is one brand to check out.
